We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Norman Angus MacAulay, age 83, on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Norman was born in Sydney, November 20, 1932, he was the son of the late Angus and Katherine (MacRitchie) MacAulay. Norman is survived by his wife, Helen (Melski); son, Ken (Darlene), Calgary, AB; daughters, Thelma, St. John’s, NL and Audrey (Jimmy) Barnes, Georges River; step-son, Bruce (Paola) Melski, Mississauga, ON. Norman is also survived by his grandchildren, Chad (Penny), Cochrane, AB, James Barnes, Sydney Mines, Jessie MacAulay, St. John’s, NL, Connor and Spencer MacAulay, Calgary, AB. Norman was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Saylor and Poppy MacAulay, Cochrane, AB. Norman was predeceased by his parents, Angus and Katherine (MacRitchie) MacAulay and his sister, Audrey MacAulay.
Norman retired from the CN Police force as a lieutenant after 35 years of dedicated service. During his career, he served as the National Treasurer for the Canadian Police Association. Norman’s life was one of service, especially to his community. He was a municipal councillor for many years, chaired multiple committees for the Town of North Sydney, he was one of the founding members of the Munro Park Committee and President of the Recreation Commission; he acted as the Chair of the Transportation Committee for the Canada Games hosted in Sydney, served as an active member of the Sydney Y’s Men’s Club and member of Sydney YMCA, the Sydney River United Church Men’s Club. Norman was also a member of the Cape Breton School Board for a number of years. Norman’s passions were sports and during his 83 years of life, he could always be found engaged in sports activities during his downtimes. In his younger years, he played basketball and hockey. During his later years, he continued an active lifestyle with golfing, curling, skating and was a long term member at the YMCA, Lingan Golf and Country Club and Sydney Curling Club. Norman served as President/Vice-President on the Northside Minor Hockey Association and Cape Breton Referees Association for over 20 years.
Norman was a gentle and kind soul who touched the lives of many. He loved spending time with his family at his cottage in Little Narrows and touring Cape Breton in the summer to appreciate the scenery and seek out Scottish music. Our dad was the core of our family and our best friend, he is going to be truly missed every day. The family would like to thank Dr. Rex Dunn, the nurses and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the exemplary care given to Norman. No visitation will be held. A funeral service to celebrate Norm’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 23rd at the United Protestant Church, Sydney River, with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. A burial at the Little Narrows Presbyterian Church Cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
