DICKSON, Helen Louise (Snow) - It is with sadness that the family of Helen Dickson announces her passing. Helen, age 91, died peacefully at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville on November 18, 2016. Helen was born in Port Wade, Annapolis County, the youngest child of the late Horace and Grace (Hayes) Snow. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, George; brother, Gordon; and sisters, Juanita Morehouse and Marion Arbou. She is survived by her children, Gena (Brian MacInnis), Neil (Namrita Gill), and Peter; and grandchildren, Erin and Sarah MacInnis, Rebecca Dickson, and Spencer Dickson; as well as several nieces and nephews. One niece, Audrey (Snow) Bateaux, grew up with Helen like a younger sister and was especially close to her. Helen was raised in Port Wade and attended high school in Digby. In 1943 she received a diploma from Normal School and subsequently taught school in Annapolis County. In the early 1950's she attended Dalhousie and received a BA, MA (English), and BEd and while at Dal she was also a goalie on the women's hockey team. Helen then taught school for many years in Halifax. During that time she took a several year break to raise her family. After her husband died she moved to Cambridge to be nearer her family. Helen was highly regarded as a successful, enthusiastic, and kind teacher. She coached a winning debate team, and helped organize school plays and class trips. In retirement she continued to work part time as a mentor for Dal BEd students. Helen had a strong faith and was very involved in church activities throughout her life. She especially enjoyed singing in the choir. In Halifax she was a member of Bethany United Church. In Cambridge she attended Cambridge Baptist Church. During the summer, Helen was most content at her beloved home in Sandy Cove, Digby County, surrounded by family and friends. She will always be remembered for her unconditional love, and for making special times so very special. Visitation was held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 21, 2016 in the Cambridge Baptist Church, Reverend Darryl Dykens officiating. Burial took place in the Zion United Church Cemetery, Sandy Cove. Donations in memory may be made to the Cambridge Baptist Church, Zion United Church Cemetery, the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
