The death of Avita Marie Curry occurred on Sunday, November 19th at the RC MacGillivary Guest Home. Born in Sydney on June 16, 1933 she was the daughter of the late Thomas William Curry and Mary MacLellan.
Avita is survived by her brother, Leo; four nephews and three nieces. She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth and two brothers, Bill and Tommy. After graduation from St. F.X., Avita joined the Sisters of St. Martha in Antigonish and took on her religious name Sister Maria Thomas. Her beginning of a lifetime in the teaching profession was in Ingonish, C.B., followed by Main a Dieu then St. Andrew’s Rural High in Antigonish. A strong advocate of continuous education she earned Master’s Degrees in Theology, Mathematics and English Literature. She was sent “on loan” to the Edmonton Catholic School Board and after serving twenty-five years she decided to leave the religious order. Avita continued her teaching career in Vancouver for a number of years. She then came back East to teach in Halifax and wound up her career at BEC in New Waterford. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank her good friend and first cousin, Ernie for caring for her so well in her declining years. Her remains will rest at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. Francis J. Abbass in St Mary Church, East Bay on Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the family plot in the Parish Cemetery.
