Malcolm J. A. MacDonald

Born In: Fourchu, Nova Scotia
Born: October 28th, 1933

Passed on: November 14th, 2016

We, the family of Malcolm John Allan MacDonald, regret to announce his passing on Thursday, November 24, 2016. Born October 28, 1933, in Fourchu, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Mary Ann (MacLeod) MacDonald. He was predeceased by his sister, Euphemia ‘Fema’ MacDonald-Strachan (Kenny); his close friend and brother-in-law, Warren A MacDonald and nephew, Warren P MacDonald Q.C. Malcolm was always a proud advocate and an admirable representative of Fourchu. Born and raised there, Malcolm continued the family tradition of fishing his own Lobster licence. Unfortunately, Lobster was not a year round job and Malcolm would travel to hard rock mines in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Ontario and Ireland, and eventually spend time in most of the Cape Breton coal mines. Wherever he went he was learning, contributing, gathering good friends along the way and returning to fish Lobster every summer in Fourchu. In the 1970’s, Malcolm was forced to decide between his full-time mining work, or his Lobster fishing licence. While Malcolm made money as a miner, fishing was in his blood. In his commitment to fishing he diversified into any other species he could fish including Groundfish, Eels, Oysters, Whelks, Scallops, Sea Urchins, Swordfish, Bluefin Tuna and was an early participant in the Snow Crab fishery. As for the Lobster, Malcolm continued to fish and promote Fourchu and Lobster making them recognizable worldwide and particularly in New York City, as anyone can see by Googling ‘Fourchu Lobster’. Malcolm worked hard at his enterprise and was always in contact with his many friends in the industry working through and for fishing associations for the betterment of all. This was just part of his nature as a friendly and generous man to his family, friends and others he found in need. He was a special and rare person who easily made lifelong friends, loved a good joke and kept in touch with a huge network of people by visit, phone, e-mail, Facebook or whatever means available. He will be missed. Malcolm is survived by his sister, Christene (Billie) MacLeod, Marion Bridge and brother, A. D. (Joan), Ottawa, Ont. Also surviving are nephews, Richard (Debbie) MacLeod, Marion Bridge, Gord (Cheryl) MacDonald, Sydney River and Andy (Karen) MacDonald, Toronto, Ont.; beloved grandnieces and nephew, Breanna, Maggie (Richard), Brittany, Jaycee, Emily, Chelsea, Katie, Mitchell (Gord), Kristina, Lindsay and Melissa; great-grandnieces, Olivia and Ellie. (Andy)
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, November 30 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Fourchu United Church on Thursday, December 1 at 11 a.m., with Nancy Whitney-Latham, DLM officiating. Reception to follow at the Fourchu Community Center.
