James Switzer

Passed on: November 20th, 2016

James Benjamin Switzer was born July 8, 1938 in Kincaid Hospital, to Benjamin and Anna (Spiess) Switzer; he was the youngest of 8 children and the only one born in a hospital. He passed away November 20, 2016 at Mankota after a battle with multiple health issues. Jim met Joyce Davidson through 4-H and they were married December 16, 1957. Jim attended Jack Creek School until grade 8, which was a half mile from the house where he lived his entire life. Jim is survived by Joyce, his loving wife, friend and constant companion, as you rarely saw one without the other; their five children Brenda, Blaine (Glenna), Beth (Floyd) Kirkpatrick, Beverly (Uli Cartman), Ben (Barb); grandchildren Matt (Danielle), Jill, Kaylee (Jeremy) Priest, Kevin (Charline) Kirkpatrick, Corbin (Katie), Sheradyn Cartman, Chanse and Tess; great-grandchildren Anabelle Priest, Nyobi Switzer, Nolan Cartman-Mersey; brothers Fred (Margaret) and Lloyd (Eva); step sister-in-law Brenda (Ron) Hancock; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim is predeceased by his parents Benjamin and Anna Switzer; parents-in-law Jim and Mae Davidson and step mother-in-law Mary Davidson; his siblings and their spouses, Dorothy (Jerry) Hunter, Earl (Megan), Elsie (Bill) Brown, Margaret (Morley) Nelson, Myrtle (Murray) Roane; niece Glenda Knox and nephew Rick Hunter. Jim always had a story to tell and was considered a historian by his family, as he remembered everyone and how they were connected. He loved visiting and was not afraid to strike up a conversation with a total stranger, even at the next table in a restaurant. Jim was an avid reader and loved music, especially country and country gospel. Jim was happiest when outside with his Angus Cattle and Quarter Horses. Through rodeo, several of the quarter horses born on Jim's ranch have won roping horse of the year. Jim's favorite time of year was branding day at his ranch, and that was what he considered to be his Christmas, as he shared it with friends and neighbors along with his family. Jim's annual week holiday was to Agribition and this year is the first time he has missed Agribition since it started in 1971. He also attended Frontier Days every year. Jim enjoyed watching his family participate in sports especially hockey, 4-H and rodeo. Before satellite TV, he would listen to boxing matches on the radio. He loved ice cream and ate at least one bowl every day and sometimes two or three. Jim was a founding member of the Mankota Stockmen's Weigh Co., as well as, a member of the Mankota Roping Club, American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association, and Saskatchewan Stock Growers. Jim will sadly be missed by his family, who can no longer say to each other "Let's ask Dad, he will know".
