Harvey Joseph  MacArthur

Family, where life begins and love never ends. With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Harvey J. MacArthur on November 27, 2016, with family by his side, at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Harvey was born in Sydney, NS on June 28, 1933. He was the son of the late Frank and Virginia MacArthur. Harvey attended Sydney Academy High School and then went on to Saint Francis Xavier University and received his Bachelor of Arts. He then attended the Maritime School of Social Work where he received his Masters of Social Work. Throughout these years, he gained many life-long friends through study and varsity sport. For the next 35 years, as a social worker, Harvey dedicated his time building stronger communities in support of children, youth and families. Harvey retired in 1994 as the Executive Director of Colchester Children’s Aids Society. Over the past 50 years in Truro, he was involved in many community organizations such as Foster Families association, Rotary Club, Kinsman Club, and the Immaculate Conception Parish. His faith and belief in community was showcased in his volunteer efforts. The most cherished friend and love of his life was Jean Ivey, from North Sydney. Their love and dedication spanned over 60 years. Together they modeled the belief that family is not just an important thing, it is everything. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean; sister, Doreen MacDonnell; brother-in-law, Ronnie Ivey; sister-in-law, Jean Ivey; daughters, Jan (John), Betty Jean (Raymond), Doreen, (Kelly); sons, Frank, Greg (Carolyn), Ian (Carole), Harvey (Wanda). Harvey was blessed and honoured to share the importance of kindness and family with his 12 grandchildren, Alex, Patrick, Nicholas, James, Elizabeth, Sebastian, Michael, Mark, Ryan, Matthew, Hannah and Hayden. He was also known as Uncle Harv to many nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 30th from 6-9 p.m. at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St.,Truro. Funeral Mass will take place at 11a.m. on Thursday, December 1st at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 669 Prince St.,Truro.
