It is with sadness and loving memory that we announce the death of
Irene McPherson at Northwood Ivany Place, Bedford, NS, on November 28, 2016. Mum was born August 2, 1923 in New Waterford, NS, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Marcia (Rossos) Vallas, who immigrated to Canada
from the Greek island of Santorini. Mum was a kind and compassionate person whose prime focus in life was her family. She loved to cook and entertain and always brought sunshine into the lives of people around her. She was a keen duplicate bridge player and could be found at bridge tables across Cape Breton for many years. She also enjoyed skating, cross-country skiing, bowling and was a member of the Lingan Golf Club.
She is survived by her sister, Sr. Frances Vallas CND, Parkland, Cape Breton; her daughters, Paula McPherson (the late Bob Jason), St. Catharines, ON and Shauna (John) Purdy, Hammonds Plains, NS; granddaughter, Janet (Leigh) Wetmore; grandsons, Robert Purdy (Christine Hardie), Jamie Purdy (Gillian Erickson) and Michael Jason; her great-grandsons, Jack Wetmore, Daniel and Sam Purdy and life-long friend Sue Dixon. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dan Hughie; her son-in-law, Bob Jason; her brother, Mike Vallas and sisters, Marie (Jim) Coleman, Cleo (Don) MacKay, Catherine (James) Chisholm, Sr. Angelina Vallas CND, Pauline(Bill) Wade and Uwana Vallas. We would like to thank all of the friends and family in Cape Breton who provided Mum with such wonderful care over the past few years. Mum was able to remain in her much loved home in New Waterford for an extended period as a result of the kindness and support provided by many people, in particular Carla
Reid. In October of 2013 Mum moved into continuing care at Ivany Place in Bedford and we cannot express enough gratitude for the support and excellent care that was provided by each and every person who cared for her there. She was truly happy in her new home and passed away in a very peaceful environment created by the caring staff of this wonderful home. Cremation has taken place and burial will be in Mount Carmel cemetery at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or to a charity of one’s choice.
