John Thomas "Jack" SCOTT

John Thomas Scott "Jack” Lifelong resident of Dominion passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 26, 2016 a few days after celebrating his 80th birthday. Jack was the beloved husband of the late Carol (Ryan) Scott. Jack was born on November 22nd, 1936 to Florence (MacPherson) and Eric Scott. Jack grew up in Dominion and after he and Carol were married in 1965 they built their home on Oceanview. He was very proud of being a life-long Dominion resident and enjoyed many walks on the boardwalk at Dominion Beach. Jack graduated from Morrison High School, Glace Bay and then began his 42 year career with DEVCO. Jack was a very dedicated employee only missing five days of work in 42 years. Jack was an avid sportsman having played baseball, softball, rugby and hockey; including being a member of the Cinderella Glace Bay Miners. Later in life he was an avid dart player and bowler. Jack was a proud and dedicated volunteer firefighter for Dominion Fire Department where he served as treasurer. He served as statistician for the Glace Bay Alpines Senior Fastball Team. Jack was a founding member and treasurer for the Dominion Minor Hockey Association and also a coach for Dominion Minor Baseball. In 2004, Jack was awarded the Gerald Lewis Golden Hawk Award for Years of Outstanding Community Spirit. Jack was a huge supporter of the Montreal Canadians and enjoyed several games at the Montreal Forum. As an avid hunter Jack enjoyed many trips to the "shack" with his hunting buddies. In June 2011, Jack moved to Portland Hills, Dartmouth to live with his son Ken, daughter-in-law, Barbara and grandson Cameron. He enjoyed sitting on the front step with his newspaper becoming well known in the neighbourhood for his friendly wave and hello to those driving or walking by. He loved watching the deer roam through the neighbourhood. Jack enjoyed calls from family and friends particularly his sons and sisters Marjorie and Marilyn. Special thanks to Paula Flynn who provided Jack with kindness, support and laughter particularly over the last year when Ken and Barbara were away from home. Jack was very appreciative of the wonderful care he received from his Family Physician Dr. Kathy Glazebrook. Jack is survived by his sons, Ken (Barbara) Dartmouth, NS; David (Sherrie) Penhold, AB and Kevin (Stephanie) Penhold, AB. Papa Jake is survived by his grandchildren, Kyle, Jane, Riley, Cameron, Ryan, Carolyn and Nathan. He was so very proud of all of them and their accomplishments. Jack is survived by his sister, Marjorie and brother-in-law, George Merrill; sister, Marilyn (wife of the late Jim MacDougall) and several nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his loving wife, Carol (Ryan), his parents, and son, Stephen. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Parish, Kings Road, Dominion at 11 a.m. Jack will be laid to rest beside Carol at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
