Norman Gellner

Passed on: November 28th, 2016

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Norman William Gellner on Monday, November 28, 2016, at the age of 83 years, beloved companion for 31 years of Vonda Wik of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory three children, Debbie (Norm) Belyk, Patsy (Kent) Walker and Brett (Jeanette) Gellner; one son-in-law Don Smith and Vonda's children, Keni-Lynn (Wayne) Bouvier and Ron (Sandra) Wik; his grandchildren, Jodi (Cam) their son Ben; Jaime (Brad) their children Madison, Mason and Max; Chelsea (Jeremy) their son Norman; Dylan, Calla, Bryan, Zach, Nicole, Mackenzie, Mariah, Zach, Josh, Nathan and one sister-in-law Joan Gellner. He was predeceased by his parents, Regina and William "Bill" Gellner; his first wife Gerd; one daughter Janis Smith and one brother Claude Gellner. Norm led a full life. He was born on December 24, 1932 in Southey, Saskatchewan. He grew up in Esk, Saskatchewan where his family owned the general store. He spent much of his youth playing competitive baseball, hockey and curling. In 1957, he married Gerd Brenna and they had four children in six years, a rather busy household. In 1960, he, along with his father Bill, and his only sibling, Claude, established Gellner Tire Service in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Through hard work, they created a prosperous, successful business, that expanded to include recreational vehicles of all types. The business eventually transformed into Datsun Village until its sale in 1985. With his early retirement, Norm and Vonda moved to Blind Bay on Shuswap Lake, where they enjoyed the next thirty years, spending winters in Arizona. Norm's passions were vast. An avid outdoorsman, he loved spending time fishing, boating, skiing, and snowmobiling. He obtained his pilot's licence and took great pleasure in recreational flying. A self taught handyman, he tackled and mastered every project and was the first to offer his services to family and friends. In fact, he, with his brother and two close friends, spent many years building and enjoying their own fishing cabin in remote Northern Saskatchewan. Another interest of his was travel, and in his lifetime, he had the opportunity to visit many parts of the world. As enjoyable as his interests were, nothing compared to his joy of spending time with his family and friends. Norm took great pride in all his children and savoured every moment with his grandchildren. They, in turn, appreciated the times they had with him. His sense of humour, caring nature and love of fun, made him so wonderful to be around. Norm was an exceptional man that was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. Special appreciation to the staff at both 2 North Medicine Hospital and South Country Village for your exceptional care. As per Norm's wishes, there will be a private Celebration of Life. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, Alberta and Northwest Territories #201, 770 6th Street SW Medicine Hat, AB T1A 4J6.
