It is with heavy hearts that we the family of Thomas Archibald ‘Archie’ Murphy, age 81, announce his passing on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional hospital. Archie passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. Born in North Sydney, Archie was the youngest son of the late Thomas and Elsie (Vatcher) Murphy. He was employed as a stevedore with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney for over 35 years. Archie was a kind and gentle man who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He had many friends who he will be fondly remembered by, who were there for him in his last days, putting a smile on his face when they came to visit. He loved their cards games and all the chatting in the parking lot. He also enjoyed family gatherings every summer in Long Island. Archie is survived by his son, Thomas Hoben (Paulette), North Sydney and his two grandchildren, Thomas and Kennedy whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his brother, William ‘Bud’ Murphy of Port Aux Basques, NL; his sister-in-law, Mary Murphy; his very good friend, Mary Liz Almon and a number of nieces and nephews who loved Uncle Arch dearly. Besides his parents, Archie was predeceased by his common-law wife, Betty Hoben; his brothers, Gerald Murphy, James Murphy; by his sisters, Marie Benac (George), Eileen ‘Dee-Dee’ Murphy (Albie), Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Ivey (Ralph); an infant sister, Elizabeth; sister-in-law, Lillian Murphy and companion, Mary Maxwell. Visitation for Archie will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the NS Heart and Stroke Foundation or any charity. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com.
