OSWEGO, NY – Martha Elizabeth Gorton, 77, a resident of Scriba, passed away on Monday December 5, 2016, at her home. Born in Newark Valley, NY, on June 20, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Sylvia (Beers) Mackey. She graduated from the Newark Valley High School in 1957. Martha was employed with the J.P. Newberry’s Department Store in Owego and the United States Post Office in Richford NY. She was a resident of the Oswego area for 35 years. She bred, showed and trained Newfoundland dogs for many years. She traveled throughout the Northeast and Midwest attending seminars and educating the general public about the Newfoundland breed. In 1997, she was part of the Newfoundland Breed Honor Guard that met Queen Elizabeth in St. Johns, Newfoundland. She volunteered for the ARC of Oswego, as well as many local schools and various festivals educating the public about what she considered her breed, the Newfoundland. She was a member of the Genesee Region Newfoundland Club and Newfoundland Club of America. She was an avid motorcyclist beginning in the mid-1960s before many women rode, she even had her own motorcycle. In 1986, she and her husband rode their motorcycles to Fairbanks, Alaska, and back home to Oswego. She enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, fishing, quilting, knitting, gardening and crafting. She was a musician that loved to sing, play the piano, organ, drums or auto harp. She was a freelance writer for several publications at her summer home in Islington, Newfoundland where she enjoyed the local music and culture.
She loved to travel, most recently visiting Brazil in South America with a close friend. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, LeRoy Gorton of Oswego; her son, Leo (Cathy) Gorton of Oswego; two grandchildren, Leo and Caitlin Gorton; a sister, Cindy Wilkowski of Humble, Texas; a sister-in-law, Linda Mackey of St. Johns, Newfoundland; and nieces and nephews, Don Wilmot, Ed Wilmot, Jennifer Mackey, Connor Mackey and Caroline Mackey. She was predeceased by her brother, Roger Mackey.
