Sarah E. Howley

Born: March 29th, 1920

Passed on: December 18th, 2016

It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our mother Sarah Elizabeth Howley, age 96, on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the Northside Community Guest Home, where she has been a resident the past eight years. Born in Point Aconi, on March 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Mary (Steele) Walker. Sarah was a long time resident of Bras d’Or, where she with her late husband Thomas, raised their five children on the family farm. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She was a wonderful homemaker and gifted seamstress. She had a keen sense of humor and a sharp wit. She welcomed company to her home and was always ready for a game of cards and one would never leave her home without a cup of tea. Sarah was a woman of strong faith who was a lifelong and devoted member of St. Joseph Parish in Bras d’Or.
She is survived by her sons, Ronald (Irene) and their children, Leonard (Heather), Paul (Tanya), Brian (Melissa); Lloyd and his children, Shaun Thomas (Bev), Michael, Angela (Peter) Jacobs, Kevin (Andreanne) and Keith; Wendell and his children, Renee Erickson, Jeffrey (Felicia); Gerard (Laurie) and their children, Steven (Crystal), Laura Jean (Derek) Petite, Dennis (Cathy Lynn); her daughter, Maureen (Bruce) Marsh and their children, Jennifer (Matthew), Kathryn (Mark) Hall and Allan (Paige). Also surviving are 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by her husband, Thomas in 2003; her parents, Neil and Mary Walker; her brothers, Mickey Dawson, Neil, Dan, Angus and Hector Walker; sisters, Florence Bonner and Mary Buckley. Special thanks to all of Mom’s caregivers, home care workers, the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home and Dr. John Kirkpatrick. Your care, concern and love was greatly appreciated. It has been a long good-bye to our mother during these past eight years as she struggled with Alzheimer disease and now on December 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m., a Mass of Christian farewell will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter McLeod presiding. Visitation for Sarah will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Reception will be held in the Church Hall following the funeral mass. Burial will take place in the Parish Cemetery, Bras d’Or at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home, C.N.I.B., Canadian Diabetes or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com.
