We regret to announce the passing of Maartje 'Rie' Monk on Thursday, December 22, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born November 2, 1917, in Holland, she was a daughter of the late Corniles and Trijtje (Plekker) Baart. Mom came to Canada as a war bride. A very strong lady to whom kindness, family and friends were everything. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
Rie is survived by her daughter, Joan Mortimer, Coxheath; son, Wilfred, Hamilton, Ont.; sisters, Trinette, Elizabeth and Petronella, Holland; brother, Joseph, Holland; grandchildren, Scott, Todd, Sarah, Jessica and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie; sister, Emmy; brothers, Daniel, Corniles, Marines and Nicholas.
A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
