I. Russell Stewart

Surrounded by his family Russell Stewart passed peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Sunday, December 25, 2016, age 83 years. Loving husband of Anne Stewart (nee Nugent) to whom he was married 62 years; father of seven children - John “Jack” (Whitney Harris), Kathleen, Terrence (Donne Smith), Allan (Lolita Thibodeau), Andrea (Aivars Berzins) and Aaron (Lisa Peters); grandfather of eight - Kyle Stewart, Mark Rhynes, Kayla Thibodeau, Raquel Paredes, Emma, Lauren and Luke Clark and Ava Stewart. Russell is also survived by siblings - Helen MacLeod of Charlottetown, Herb Stewart of Greenwood, N.S., and Allan Stewart of Plymouth, Mass. He was predeceased by his son, Mark; his parents, Mark and Helen (nee Hardy) Stewart; and his sister, Shirley Murdoch. Russell grew up in New Glasgow, N.S. He married his sweetheart, Anne Nugent of Stellarton, N.S. Russell was known as a top athlete, a hockey hall of famer and a superb golfer. His career took him and his young family across much of eastern Canada. They settled in PEI where he finished his career as manager of the UPEI bookstore. Russell was also involved in the community where he served on the School Board and Charlottetown City Council; he was chair of the Police Commission. Family was paramount for Russell. He was a dedicated husband and father. He always went above and beyond for Anne and his children. Russell is remembered for his kindness, his gentle spirit and smiling eyes. He was a gentleman to the end. There will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A memorial service will be held during the summer of 2017. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
