Dr. James Alfred Hopkins

Dr. James Alfred Hopkins died in the presence of his loving family, after a courageous struggle with PSP, at the age of 81. He passed away on December 25, 2016, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, in Truro, Nova Scotia. He will be greatly missed by his wife Janet, children, Jennifer (Harold), Andrew (Van) and Tim, as well as his beloved grandchildren, Alex, Matthew, and Catherine Berghuis, and Parker, Cole and Matheson Hopkins. He will also be remembered by brothers Bob (Barbara), Tim and Tom (Barbara), as well as a large circle of family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Tot, and his sister Barbara. Jim was born in Bishop's Falls and raised in Grand Falls, Newfoundland. A graduate of Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Technical College, he worked across Canada in the pulp and paper industry as a chemical engineer. In 1970, Jim returned to his native province to pursue a career in medicine. During his time as a physician, he served as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, who later awarded him with an honourary lifetime membership. He is also remembered for his work at the Newfoundland School for the Deaf. Jim was generous and funny, and he loved a good party. He could build or fix anything, much to the appreciation of the recipients of his handiwork. His much loved summer residence at Abel's Cape, Bay Fortune, PEI will not be the same without him. The family wishes to thank the respite care staff of Colville Manor, Souris, PEI, the palliative care team in Truro and the Colchester East Hants VON caregivers. Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. A reception in Jim's memory will be held at Clovelly Golf Club, main clubhouse, St. John's, on Friday, December 30, from 2 to 5 pm. Arrangements are entrusted to the Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro, where online condolences may be conveyed at: www.ColchesterCommunity.com.
