Passed on: December 28th, 2016

Passed away peacefully in Nantwich, United Kingdom on December 28th, 2016, aged 87. Born August 25, 1929 in Crewe (Cheshire, England), Frederick was the youngest of six. He is predeceased by his parents Archibald and Laura, by his adult brothers Wilfred, Thomas and Ronald, and by his siblings Reginald and Nancy, who died as children. Sixteen years ago (less a day), he lost his beloved wife and life partner Patricia (née Davies). In Newfoundland, Frederick is survived by his sons Andrew and Simon, his daughters-in-law Violet and Edith, and by his grandchildren David and Katherine. In England, Frederick is survived by his nephews Alistair, David, Christopher and Martin, and by his nieces Ann, Carole, Sandra and Fiona. On both sides of the Atlantic, he is missed by friends of the family and by many others who knew him.

Frederick was a quiet man, but his still waters ran deep. He was a keen observer, an opinionated commentator, an analytical thinker and a skilled craftsman. He loved all intellectual and physical puzzles and challenges, and even in his later years, remained the only member of the family who could consistently finish the Guardian's fiendish cryptic crossword. He was an enthusiastic traveller, and continued to explore new destinations after losing Patricia, as she would have urged him to do. He was a lover of good food and fine wines, and an enthusiastic connoisseur of the water of life, who retained a small collection of single malts right to his final days, despite the rules of the nursing home.

Frederick was a complex and diverse man of may talents, but he was above all things a loving husband and father, and a generous and kindly soul. Please join his family in wishing him a safe passage to a new place where all his memories will be restored clearly and fondly, just as we will keep clear and fond memories of him for as long as we can.

Cremation has already taken place in Cheshire, A celebration of Fred's life, featuring live jazz and likely some water of life, will be held in Cheshire at a date and location to be announced. Those who would like to be informed as these plans develop are asked to contact the family at
