Passed on: December 20th, 2016

Gordon Watson passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current SK, at the wonderful age of 92, and so willing to meet his Saviour. Gordon Thomas Watson was born March 26, 1924 to Thomas & Vestel Watson in Vidora, SK, the second eldest of twelve children. Gordon lost both of his parents at a young age and became an integral part of the family — working hard to bring in money to support his siblings, as well as being a supportive big brother to them all. Gordon and his siblings operated a dray system out of Vidora until the work was no longer available. There were many other jobs to do, he went to work for ranchers and farmers as work came available. He was a real cowboy, and was hired to ride over several parts of southern Saskatchewan, bringing back teams of horses and herds of cattle. His stories of these times were both humorous and sad, as they were truly tough times. He often spoke of these times as he met and worked with several of his soon to be brothers-in-law. When working south east of Val Marie, SK, he met the love of his life, Agnes Schmidt. They were married May 24, 1949 in Rosefield, SK. Together, they had seven children — Thomas, Linda, Jane, Sheila, Donna, Tim, and Brent. Throughout their 67 years of marriage, they lived across the prairies in Montana, and then again settled in Val Marie — purchasing and running the local store for several years. In those years, he was Mayor and Fire Chief, instrumental in building the low-income and senior housing, and contributing to the running of a small town. During the years of raising his family and helping others of the community, he was a sports dad — driving all over the province for hockey, volley ball, and basketball games and being their #1 fan. Gordon enjoyed curling when he could. Gordon was an active member of his community, was committed to his church, and belonged to many organizations. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 64 years, becoming an honorary member, the Prairie Pioneers Kiwanis, delivered Meals on Wheels, and did other volunteer work. He loved visiting and could make conversation with a total stranger. Gordon & Agnes’ door was always open to friends and family for a visit, a meal, or a place to stay. He loved to fish — and bring them home for Agnes to clean — working in his wood shop, and watching wrestling, but especially loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Having family visit always brought a smile to his face. Gordon leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Agnes Watson; his children, Linda (Dan) Jones, Jane (Tim) McCrea, Sheila (Richard) Paradis, Donna (Darrel) Butler, Tim (Dixie Thorburn) Watson, and Brent (Jackie) Watson; his daughter-in-law, Vikki Watson; his nineteen grandchildren; his seventeen great-grandchildren; his two great-great-grandchildren; his siblings, Ruth Lewis, Bob & Millie Watson, Betty LaFace, and Edward Watson; his in-laws, Tony Schmidt, Mary Schmidt, Red Gauthier, and Robert & Alice McConnell; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his oldest son, Thomas Watson; both his and Agnes’ parents; a son and daughter-in-law; several of his siblings and in-laws; and by other family members. The Memorial Mass was held on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 1:00 pm from Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Parish, Swift Current, SK, with Rev. Msgnr. Reymundo Asis serving as Celebrant. The organist for the service was Marlene Dolter. The ushers in the church were Elmer Palmer, Glen Lewis, Jim Brown, and Warren Watson. The Interment Service was held Saturday, December 24, 2016 at the Val Marie Cemetery, Val Marie, SK. In memory of Gordon Watson, donations made to the Building Fund for Christ the Redeemer Parish or the Cypress Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
