It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Eddie MacDougall, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, on Sunday, January 1st 2017, at the Northside General Hospital, after a lengthy illness. At the age of 73 years, Eddie has now been released from all pain and discomfort. Born and raised in North Sydney on November 15, 1943, Eddie was the son of the late Stephen and Agnes (MacNeil) MacDougall. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Eddie was employed at Marine Atlantic in North Sydney, where he worked in the machine shop for many years and a clerk in various other departments until his retirement. It was here that co-workers and friends affectionately named him “Steady Eddie”. He was a very well read man and an excellent conversationalist.
Eddie is survived by his wife, Myrtle (Anderson) MacDougall, who was a devoted caretaker and supporter throughout Eddie’s illness, seldom leaving his side. He is also survived by his loving daughter, Karen (Rock) Ferland and their four wonderful boys, the loves of Eddie’s life, his grandsons, Samuel, Jeremy, Jacob and Branden Ferland. Eddie is also survived by his brothers, Hughie (Velma), Allan (Debbie) his sisters, Josephine (Lennie) Shaw and Kathleen (Barry) Muller and his aunt, Mildred Brown; sisters-in-law, Dulcie Eady, Francine MacDougall, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Eddie was predeceased by his son, Stephen; his brother, Daniel; his father and mother-in-law, Alex and Beatrice Anderson and brother-in-law, Lyle Eady. We the family sincerely thank the nurses of the 5th floor for their consistent caring ways, Home Care for the excellent care and attention on Eddie’s behalf. Thank you too for the many laughs you lightened his spirit with. The family would also like to thank Dr. Patrick O’Grady who was very kind and thoughtful to both Eddie and Myrtle during a most difficult time. Visitation for Eddie will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Haley Street Adult Services or a charity of choice.
