Alice L. Richards

Born: August 10th, 1920

Passed on: January 3rd, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Alice Richards (MacLean), age 96, on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
Alice was born in Gabarus, Cape Breton, August 10, 1920. She was the daughter and eldest child of Dan S. and Anne Edna (Bagnell) MacLean, Gabarus, Cape Breton. For years, Alice was actively involved with C.A.C.L. and three years ago, was made an honorary member of the Board of Directors of the Horizon Achievement Centre. Despite vision and hearing loss, she would be dropped off at the board member meetings, just wanting to be there, rain or shine. Mom devoted many hours of her time with activities for the mentally challenged of the Horizon Achievement, such as taking score at bowling every Sunday, as well as helping with dances, etc. Alice was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards with her special friends. She welcomed people stopping by for a good cup of tea with her homemade biscuits or cinnamon rolls while enjoying many laughs. Mom will be missed by many. Alice is survived by daughters, Carolyn Degg (Sid) and Cheryl MacIntyre (Gerry Tubrett); son, David Richards (Marilyn); granddaughters, Amber Young (Darrell), Carrie Richards (Mark), Amy Richards (Kyle). She was great-grandmother to Colton and Caelan Young and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Solloway and Lillian MacAskill; brothers, Gordon, Fulton and Stewart MacLean; son, Blair Richards. Special thanks to the staff of the Cove Guest Home for the wonderful care provided to our mother. Visitation for Alice Richards will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton St., Sydney, on Friday, January 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday 11 a.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Zion Cemetery, Gabarus Lake. Memorials to the Horizon Achievement Building Fund would be appreciated.
