Viola Dickie, age 97, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at The Meadows in Swift Current, SK. Viola Margery Dickie (nee Selnes) was born September 4, 1919 to Albert & Myrtle Selnes in Calgary, AB. After graduating from high school, she attended business school in Regina, SK. Viola served in the Canadian Air Force during WWII and was stationed in London, England during the Blitz. On December 21, 1946, Viola married Joseph Dickie in Edmonton, AB. Together they had two had two children, Judith and Rod. She was a longtime secretary for the Ag & Ex in Swift Current, SK. She also worked as secretary to the Elections Canada Returning Officer through several elections. Known for her cheerful disposition, wonderful smile, and infectious laugh, Viola loved to be on the go and was involved in many varied activities. An avid cook and gardener, she also loved to read and travel. She was formerly a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the UCW at First United Church. Depending on the season, she could be found cheering for the Swift Current Indians, Swift Current Broncos, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Viola is survived by her children, Judith Dickie and Rod (Karen) Dickie; her grandchildren, Lindsay Dickie and Taylor Dickie; and by her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Dickie; her parents, Albert & Myrtle Selnes; and by her sisters, Janet Schmitz, Jean Appleby, Dorothy Shrum, and their husbands. The Funeral Service was held Thursday, January 5, 2017 from First United Church, Swift Current, SK at 2:00 pm with Rev. Annette Taylor officiating. The organist for the service was Patti McCleary. “In the Bulb There is a Flower” was sung by the congregation. “Steal Away,” “All Through the Night,” and “Gift of Love” was sung by the Medicine Hat TarTones Men’s Chorus for special music. The ushers at the church were Art Spiker and Frank Dickie. The private Interment Service was held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current prior to the Funeral Service. In memory of Viola Dickie, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the SPCA, and the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
