Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Oake

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Oake, 92, passed away peacefully at Celtic Court, on Sunday, January 8, 2017. Born February 23, 1924, in St. John’s, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late William and Mildred (Dean) Simmonds.
After the Second World War, she married Raymond and relocated to Sydney, where they resided until 1979, when they retired to their new home in Ross Ferry. She remained there until she moved to Williston House in 2003. For 27 years, Betty worked in the Men’s Department at Crowell’s. Her life-long hobbies included skating, swimming, gardening, as well as knitting and quilting for her loved-ones. Her heart-warming and bubbly personality would put a smile on everyone’s face.
Betty is survived by her four much-loved sons, Ray (Marie) and Blair (Rose), Sydney, and Lorne (Darlene) and David (Denise), Big Bras d’Or. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Blair Jr. (Pam), Edmonton, Ginny, Natalie (Matthew Murchison), Coxheath, Adam (Jaclynn), Edmonton, Tyler (Rhea), Fort St. John, Cailin, Edmonton, Christopher, St. John’s and Bailey, Big Bras d’Or. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Morley and Eliot; her sister-in-law, Frances Oake, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Raymond (1987); sisters, Phyll (Frank) Dilworth and Vi (Wall) Barnes; brothers, Irv (Mary) Simmonds and Reg (Phyllis) Simmonds. She was also predeceased by her in-laws, Millie (Fred) Dean, Margaret (Wes) Pretty, Charlie (Pearl) Oake, Walter Oake and Ernie (Nellie) Oake.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, January 11 from 1-3 p.m., followed by a service in the chapel at 3 p.m., with Rev. Richie Robinson officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to the Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to the dedicated, caring staff at Celtic Court where Betty felt at home and loved.
