Our hearts are broken to have lost our beloved husband, father, papa and brother, Gerald. He passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family at the age of 66. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John Murdock and Mary Sarah (MacKinnon) MacNeil of Shenacadie.
He was a member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys parish, Operating Engineers Local 721 and Partner Member of Bell Aliant Pioneers.
Gerald was a loving man, so proud of his family. He loved having family and friends around. He took great pride in working on his backyard oasis, where he and Heather spent many, many days hosting many happy occasions. He was a great history buff, always providing us with information. Gerald was a true Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
Gerald always looked forward to having our company from away, be it the ‘Americans’, Ontario, Debert, or the Valley. He so loved playing the host. He loved Celtic music, square dancing, ceilidhs and social gathering with the ‘Captain’ ever present. The past number of years, Gerald and Heather did a lot of travelling, going on a cruise, winter trips to destinations in the South, Boston and New York.
Gerald was a heavy equipment operator all his life, self-employed for a time and working for local construction companies. He took great pride in his work and was well respected for it.
He is survived by his wife, Heather; daughter, Karen, PEI; son, Colin, Alberta; grandchildren, Laughlan, Rory, Malcolm and Liam; sisters, Linda MacNeil, Irene MacNeil, Maureen (Everett) Sullivan and Anita MacNeil; brothers-in-law, John (Frances) MacNeil, Kenny MacNeil and sisters-in-law, Kim MacNeil, Roberta Steele and Betty Ann Matheson.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or Atlantic Burn Camp.
