Irene ‘Betty’ Dean

With sincere sadness, we, the family of Betty Dean, regret to announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born December 26, 1931, in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Edgar and Sarah Elizabeth (Band) Pearson. An active member of the Church of Christ the King, Sydney, Betty was involved with the Altar Guild and ACW, as well as helping out with various other duties. She was also a member of the former St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Coxheath, where she participated in the ACW and the Altar Guild. Every week she took great pride in doing the linens required for the altar. In her childhood, Betty was a member of All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, as well as helping out with Sunday School and the ACW. In 1994, she was the recipient of the Ann Terry Memorial Award. Betty also received the Government of Canada award for volunteering, as well as an award for her hard work with the Cape Breton Society of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She was also very active with the deaf council in Halifax. Betty is survived by her two sons, Brian (Doris), Albert Bridge and their children, Charmaine and Kimberley and Brent (Peggy), Moncton, N. B. and their children, Abby and Emily; brother, James (Odile), New Waterford; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Cpl. Howard Dean in 1989; sisters, Ethel MacLean and Marion Oliver; brothers, Sidney ‘Sid’, Thomas, Charlie, Richard and Robert (in infancy); brothers-in-law, Nelson MacLean and Austin Oliver.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. A requiem funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Wednesday 2 p.m., with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. Interment in St. Mark’s Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians.
