Frederick James Moffitt

Passed on: January 17th, 2017

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Honourary Colonel Frederick James Moffitt, who passed away peacefully wrapped in his wife's arms on January 17, 2017. He died as he had lived, with grace, dignity and a loving heart. Fred was the beloved husband and soulmate of Anne (Manning); cherished father of Andrew (wife Deborah) of Warwickshire, England and Sarah of Bristol, England; adored granddad of Hannah, Alexander, Ellie and Rebecca; loving great-granddad of Oscar; dearly loved brother of Doreen Robson (husband George) of Yorkshire, England; loving son-in-law of Monica Manning (of St. John's; fun loving brother-in-law to Glenn Manning (wife Sylvie) of Courtice, Ontario, Todd Manning of Edmonton, George Robson and Michael Feeney; dear uncle to Tony, Pip, Fiona, Jill, Rachel and Olivia. As well as a wide circle of family and friends. Fred was predeceased by his parents Frederick Thomas Moffitt and Marie Elizabeth Moffitt (nee George), his father-in-law Gerard Manning, his sister Margaret Harrison and his nephew Tim Robson. Fred was born during WWII in Bedlington, Northumberland, England. His childhood in the North of England contributed greatly to the man he became. Fred was raised in a loving, close family in which honesty, a strong work ethic and a good education were expected and promoted. Strong, hard working parents and two ever vigilant, loving, elder sisters nurtured Fred and helped shape his values and his character. From humble beginnings in Sutton Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, Fred's family burst with pride as "our Freddie" graduated as a flying officer from the Royal Air Force's flight training academy at R.A.F Cranwell. In a decorated and rewarding 30 year career, Flight Lieutenant Fred Moffitt flew around the world in the mighty Hercules. His final overseas posting with the Royal Air Force was to Gander, NL where Fred was appointed Detachment Commander. It is here that he met the love of his life, married and settled into another chapter in his rich life. Upon retirement from the Royal Air Force Fred embarked upon another career, that of entrepreneur, when he opened, with a business partner, Jungle Jim's restaurant in Gander in 1996. In retirement, Fred served as a director and subsequently Chairman of the Board of the Gander International Airport Authority, Chairman of the Employment Insurance Appeals Board and Grand Master of the Gander Masonic Lodge. But by far, the roles that provided Fred with the greatest pride and sense of fulfillment were that of Honourary Colonel of Search and Rescue 103 Gander and Honourary Colonel of C.F.B. 9 Wing Gander. Fred was "a soldier's soldier". Fred truly epitomized the titles "an officer and a gentleman". He saw the best in everyone and always looked on the positive side of life. Fred's life was rich with laughter, adventure, travel, friendships and most importantly, love. He was a devoted husband and partner to Anne for 28 loving and happy years, a proud father to his two children, a cool granddad to his grandchildren, an adored brother to his sisters and a steadfast friend to innumerable people, around the world, throughout his life. There was no one like him. Fred was always, resolutely, effortlessly, himself... And that is exactly why we loved him so much. We are incredibly thankful we had him in our lives and we will forever have him in our hearts. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held on Thursday, January 19th and Friday, January 20th at Stacey's Funeral Home from 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. Family and friends are invited to participate in a celebration of Fred's life at St. Martin's Anglican Cathedral on Saturday, January 21st at 2:00 P.M.
