Stanley Jerome McNeill – 82, passed away peacefully at the Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou, on Wednesday, January 18, 2017.
Born November 13, 1934 in Pictou, Stan was the youngest of 10 children of the late James and Mary (MacDougall) McNeill.
He was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University (1958) and his 32-year teaching career included serving as principal of Pictou Academy and Dr. Thomas McCulloch Junior High from 1967 to 1989.
Stan married Blanche (Cormier), who predeceased him in 2007, on August 25, 1958. They were proud parents and grandparents of: Ian, wife Shan (Ferguson) and children Christie (Steve Waltho) and Ben, Ancaster, ON; Stan, wife Jane (Innes) and children Jacqueline and Colin, Calgary, AB; Frank, wife Eileen MacIsaac and children Sean and Beth, Pictou; Adele and children Meghan and Sarah Greene, Lower Sackville, NS; John, wife Sandra Young and children Andrew and Joelle, Edmonton, AB; Mary, husband Allan MacLeod and children Jenny and Aaron, Edmonton, AB; and Sandy, Victoria, BC.
Stan was involved in numerous school, community and church organizations. He was past president of West Pictou Local NSTU, member of Pictou County and Provincial Executive School Administrators Association, member of Pictou County Retired Teachers Association, and a driver education instructor and administrator. He was past president of Pictou Rotary Club and past commodore of the Pictou Yacht Club.
A life time and devoted member of Stella Maris Parish, he was active in parish council, fundraising campaigns, hospitality ministry, and was past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Fr. Gerald MacKenzie Council #8608 and a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly #2222. One of his greatest joys in life was sailing on his beloved sailboat ‘Macus’ with his family.
In his retirement he also enjoyed trips to Florida with Blanche, and playing bridge.
He is survived by his brother, Walter in Oregon.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Jack, Bert, Allister ‘Peller’, James ‘Jimmy’, Paul; and sisters, Rita Walker, Florence McNeill and Laurel DeCourcy.
His family would like to extend thanks to the staff of the Maritime Oddfellows Home for their care of Stan over the past five years.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 2 pm Sunday from Stella Maris Church, Pictou with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery.
Memorial donations to the Stella Maris Parish Restoration Fund, Stella Maris Parish Cemetery Fund or a charity of choice would be gratefully appreciated.
