Passed on: January 9th, 2017

Gordon Grant passed away peacefully on Monday January 9, 2017 at the Cypress Health Region, Swift Current at the age of 92. Gordon was born September 11, 1924 at Climax, SK to Jack and Margaret (Ritchie) Grant. He was the oldest of four children. Gordon lost his father when he was just five years old so he had to help on the farm at a very early age. He worked at various jobs to help support his siblings. With his Mother's determination and the hired men Gordon spoke so fondly of, they kept the farm in operation. Gordon's Mother passed away in 1950, but the legacy they built together in their farm still exists today. Gordon went to Whitewater School and Thorne School until Grade eight. He often spoke of the distance he had to go to get to school. He usually walked but sometimes he rode horses. Gordon excelled in his education especially math. He could easily calculate bushels of grain and weights of cattle in his head. His success in the family farm was acknowledged when they received the 100 Year Heritage Plaque in 2011. He was so proud that the farm is a fourth-generation farm. Grain farming was not his only passion, he was very passionate about his cattle. Gordon and his Mother were the original patrons of the Lone Tree PFRA. Gordon could always be found in the cattle pens at branding time and shipping time. When his mobility limited him from getting in to help, you would find him sitting on his four- wheeler watching commenting on the size of the calves and how good they looked.
In 1951 Gordon met the love of his life Steiva Dukat when she came to work for a neighbour. They were married June 19, 1952. They had 64 wonderful years together. They worked side by side all through their farming years. Gordon enjoyed socializing and dancing was another one of his passions whether it was Good Old Tyme dancing, square dancing or round dancing. Gordon and Steiva took several trips to Ontario, B.C, The Maritimes and various points in the U.S.A. The one trip he talked about with such joy was the one they took to England in 1994 to visit his 100-year old Aunt. One of Gordon's great accomplishments was at 87 years of age he started to use a laptop. He emailed, played games, looked up information, read the news and checked the weather regularly.
Family was very important to Gordon. He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He took pride in the accomplishments of his family and enjoyed all the family functions that were held at the farm. He was always eager to have a conversation with anyone and was interested in everything anyone had to say. Gordon would go to as many functions his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in - concerts, sports, dancing, graduations, weddings, and be seen sitting so proudly.
In 2007 Gordon and Steiva bought a condo in Swift Current where they spent the winters, but couldn't wait to return to the farm in the spring. Gordon could be seen riding the lawn mower cutting grass making sure the yard was well kept or in the garden sitting on his four-wheeler watching Steiva in the garden.
We have fond memories of Gordon, Dad, Bumpa whether it be helping with the cattle, farming, riding around in the trucks looking at crops, sitting on his knee with a good story book or just sitting at the kitchen table visiting.
Gordon leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 64 years Steiva Grant; his children Maryann (Tom) Belza and Steven (Kathy) Grant; six grandchildren Melissa (Brian) Ellis, Heather (Chad) Painchaud, Kevin (Maureen) Grant, Stephanie (Aaron) Gross, Kelly (Richa) Grant, Jessie Grant (Samantha Fischer); great grandchildren Tyson Ellis, Colby Ellis, Evan Ellis, Zackary Painchaud, Alex Painchaud, Samantha Grant, Sophie Grant, Matthew Gross, Mia Gross. He is also survived by a sister Edna Loewen; sister-in-laws Liz and Tom Donnelly, Mary and Phil Dillon, Frieda Meise, Chris Dukat and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by both his parents John and Margaret Grant; infant son Richard; mother and father- in-law John and Mary Dukat; brothers Jim and Jack Grant; sisters-in-law Verona and Sonja Grant and brothers-in-law Gerald Lowen and John Dukat.
The Celebration of Life was held January 14, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. from the Church of the Nativity, Val Marie, Sask. With Father Joseph Strohopher officiating, the Final Resting Place is Masefield Cemetery, Masefield Sask.
