It is with heavy hearts that we the family of Phyllis Gwendolyn MacLeod announce her peaceful passing on Jan 26, 2017, at The Cove Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family. Born June 14th, 1930 in Sydney to the late Robert Drake and Florence Nightingale Drake (MacPherson)
She is survived by her loving husband, William Nelson MacLeod; children, Bonnie Lee Sutherland (Eric) Terri Ann Carabin (Les), David William MacLeod (Sandra), Vicki Lynn Marie MacLeod (Sandy) she will also be lovingly missed by 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents she is Predeceased by daughter, Linda Louise MacLeod; grandson, Jonathan Charles Carabin; sister, Marie Long-Dickson, and brother, Robert Drake.
Our mother was a woman of great faith and Christian conviction. Her whole worldview bore a reflection of her faith and as such it impacted her whole life. Subsequently this life of faith impacted her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many others. This is the part of her legacy that she leaves with us (her Christian faith) and it lives on in our lives and our children’s lives. As we watched her slip away Thursday evening we know that she was transported to a “far better” place where she met her Saviour, Jesus face to face. Knowing this we are at peace with her passing even though we will miss her very much. But, we will meet again!
Mom was a well-informed lady who did not find it necessary to promote herself and preferred to remain in the background. However, when asked she offered advice and that advice was always golden. Mom was very family focused. We knew we were central in her life and we knew we were dearly loved. Mom had a gift of hospitality. Our parents’ home in Baddeck was always crowded with family and friends. It was her delight to host many crowds in whatever home they were living. Mom loved adventure. Whether it was sailing, motor-biking, skiing, traveling, etc., she was just game for any of it. Together they built W.A. Macleod & Son Ltd. into a successful wholesale food distribution business. They also developed a commercial warehouse rental company Gwennel Holdings Ltd., which is still in operation today.
Mom and Dad had large hearts for ministry to others. Much of my parent’s ministry together was toward helping children. Over the years they poured their time and resources into local ministries like Cape Breton Bible Camp, Munroe Academy, Riverview Sunday School, Faith Baptist Youth Group and other churches. Mom was a commissioner in the Girl Guide movement. They loved the ministries of Compassion of Canada, the Gideons, Christian Women’s Club of Sydney and many others. Mom was a founding member of the YMCA at the age of 16, where she attended until she was 82.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.
Funeral service will be held the following day, Monday, Jan.30, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with reception to follow.

“ For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians 13:12-13
