Born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late George Hillier and Elizabeth (Kendall) Hillier.
In her early adult years, Ruth was employed as a sales person at Sears, Halifax and after her marriage accompanied George to Marathon, Ontario, where she worked in a general store. After her family was grown, she baby sat many children in the New Glasgow area and kept in contact with these children and families over the years.
Ruth enjoyed membership in the Campers Association travelling in Canada and US. She was an avid bowler and participated in the housewives league for many years. She had a competitive nature and was also involved in Fifty Five Plus where she loved to play darts and cards. Ruth, along with her husband Dick, was very fond of old time dancing and loved to get together with friends and family for a “time”. Ruth was a member of Trinity United Church and United Church Women during her lifetime.
Ruth was an avid gardener and shared many awards from Communities in Bloom with Dick over the years. She could turn a twig with a single leaf into a beautiful bush. Ruth kept her body physically fit while enjoying skating, cross country skiing, exercise and yoga classes. When at home, she loved to cook and bake from scratch and knit many afghans over the years. Ruth loved to watch the birds and always made sure the feeders were full so that she could enjoy them from her picture window as she became older. She was a committed recycler and loved the beautiful things she found in nature.
Ruth was particularly fond of her grandchildren and all their interests and talents and travelled to watch their hockey, baseball, basketball games and dance shows as well as their graduations. As they entered the workforce, she always proudly boasted of their accomplishment to her friends and family- a proud and doting grandmother she was.
Ruth was married to her husband Dick for 65 years prior to his passing in October of 2015. She is survived by her two sons, Paul (Margaret Anne), Charlo NB, and Philip (Jean), New Glasgow, NS; grandchildren, Scott, Stephen, Patrick, Glen and Mary; great grandson, Levi and great granddaughter Winnie.
