Born: October 29th, 1936

Passed on: January 31st, 2017

On January 31, 2017 we lost a very special lady when Joan (MacInnis) MacNeil passed peacefully at Harbourstone, (Spanish Bay) in Sydney.
Born October 29, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Elizabeth (MacNeil) MacInnis. Joan graduated from Holy Angels and completed a commercial program at Mount Saint Bernard. She worked at several businesses in Sydney and Toronto. She was later employed with Catholic Charities when she was involved with the placement of orphaned babies, this was a vocation Joan truly loved. Eventually, Joan attended St. Francis Xavier and spent the remainder of her working career teaching business at Sydney Academy. In 1982 Joan married Steve MacNeil; he brought Joan into a kind and caring family who loved her dearly. Joan and Steve spent many wonderful years together and loved visiting Florida for a winter break. Joan was a positive, cheerful person who enjoyed the simple things in life such as playing music, dancing, skating, playing bridge, sewing and baking treats for family. Joan had a great love of animals and owned several furry pets over her lifetime. She was an active member of Sacred Heart parish and a member of the CWL. Joan will be dearly missed by her sister, Kathleen ‘Kay’ McIntosh and will be remembered and cherished by her six step-children, Gerard (Carol), Stephanie (Edwin), Nadine, Frank (Cathy), Elayne and Brendan (Lisa) as well as her grandchildren, David, Michael, Christopher, Alex, Andrew, Beth, Scott, Stephanie, Chelsey, Paulina, David, Meghan and Margaret. Joan will also be missed by her nieces, Jane, Elizabeth, Patricia, Mary Ellen, Francis, Sheila, Patricia, Joan, Jackie and nephews, Michael, Bernard, John and David. She is also survived by and will be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law, Dorothy MacInnis. She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen; her sister, Anna; brothers, Donnie ‘Farmer’ and Angus ‘Porky’.
As per her wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2017 at St. Theresa's church with Fr. Alex MacLellan officiating. Inurnment at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. We would like to thank the staff at Parkland Cape Breton as well as Harbourstone (Spanish Bay) for their exceptional support and kindness towards Joan.
