It is with sadness we announce the passing of Bernard Allen Amey, age 80, on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at his home. Born in North Sydney on May 2, 1936, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mildred (Dearing) Amey. Bern worked for a number of years aboard the Marine Atlantic vessels and later became a Red Seal Carpenter working various construction jobs and later taught carpentry at Memorial High School. He had many interests, he was an avid sailor, curler, golfer, dart player and artist. He was often called upon to make his famous seafood chowder. He loved going for drives in the car to visit friends and enjoy the scenery around Cape Breton. Bern was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, the Northern Yacht Club, Seaview Golf and Curling Clubs and the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his children, April Henebury, Lower Sackville, Dianna Amey, Dartmouth, Beverly Amey (Wayne Brewer), North Sydney, Art Amey (Holli Brittain), Winnipeg, Bill (Lisa) Amey, Moosejaw and Starr Amey (Chris Bedgood), Stillwater Lake. Bern is also survived by his loving partner of 20 years, Mary Delores Long and his step-children, Eric (Jennifer) Long, Sydney Mines, Carrie (Greg) MacRitchie, Sydney, Heather (Cliff) Andrews, Hammonds Plains and Helen Long, Amherst, his 23 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Also surviving is his sister, Yvonne Ferguson; his brother-in-law, Dennis Gale; sisters-in-law, Betty Amey, Diane Amey, Jean-Marie Amey, Marilyn Amey; his special aunt, Ruth Dearing and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara (Mombourquette) of 17 years in 1974; his sisters, Tean Gale and Betty Gale; his brothers, William, Donald, Roy and Roland Amey; son-in-law, Jim Henebury; brothers-in-law, Elmer Gale and Bruce Ferguson.
The family would like to thank the EHS Paramedics, Cape Breton Regional Police, Palliative Care, the VON and Dr. Bill MacDonald for the care and concern shown to Bern and family. Visitation for Bern will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. Burial will be held at Lakeside Cemetery at a later date.
