The family of Weldon Carter Travis age 80 of Amherst are deeply saddened to announce his passing at home on Monday, February 6, 2017, following a courageous battle with cancer. Heaven has gained an Angel today, as Weldon was truly a gentle and kind hearted man
Born in Amherst on November 15, 1936, he was the son of the late Clifford and Helen (Bowser) Travis.
Weldon grew up on a family farm in Warren and attended the one room schoolhouse there. He graduated from Amherst Regional High School in 1955 and later the Nova-Scotia Agricultural College in 1957. During these years he was a very active member and later a 4-H leader for several years. Following graduation from N.S.A.C. he took over the family farm which he operated with his parents, until a career change saw him sell most of the farm and move to East Amherst. Weldon was then employed with the Nova Scotia Animal Breeders Co-Op, serving most of Cumberland County as a (A.I.) technician for 15 years. Throughout his life he always had a keen interest in farming and agriculture in general and was very active in several farm organizations and co-operatives. Another career change saw him joining the staff of Trinity- St. Stephens United Church in Amherst working as a custodian and maintenance for 18 years, retiring in 1998. During these years he operated his own part-time business providing custom tractor work.
Following retirement he met and married the joy and love of his life Nancy. They enjoyed many happy experiences, travelling and having family gatherings at their cottages; at Weldon’s in Jacksons Point and Nancy’s at the Gulf Shore. Time at the cottages with family, relatives and friends meant a lot to them both. Rarely did they travel without their little dog Casey seated between them and rarely did they miss a Rambler hockey game on Saturday nights.
Weldon enjoyed snowmobiling, four wheeling and boating with family and friends. He also enjoyed time in his wood lot.
As a child Weldon attended the Warren Baptist Church where he later became a member of the Board of Trustees. He served as chairman for most of his life and was very involved with the cemetery improvement, maintenance and expansion, as well as building maintenance.
Weldon is survived by his wife, Nancy (Craib); two sisters, Carolyn (Arthur) Phinney of Paradise, NS, and Ruth (Robin) Phillips of Valley, NS; sister-in-law Dorothy Travis of Saint John, NB; brother-in-law, Keith Crowe of Mapleton NS; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Weldon is also survived by his step children, Andree Legere of Halifax, NS, Matthew (Temina) Legere of Sackville, NB and Alex Legere (Stacey) of Amherst as well as two grandchildren Keiara and Eaden.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Roderick; sisters, Lorna Crowe and Eleanor Travis.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 9 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St. Amherst, (902)-667-9906.
Weldon was a member of the Trinity- St. Stephen’s United Church in Amherst from where a service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday at 2:00 pm with Rev. Nigel Weaver and Rev. Will Ferry. A reception will follow.
Cremation has taken place, burial will take place in the spring in the Amherst Cemetery.
