New Glasgow - Lila Catherine Sutherland, passed away peacefully Monday, February 6, 2017, at the age of 92 at the Aberdeen Hospital, surrounded by her girls. Born in Ashworth, Ontario on December 19, 1924, she was a daughter of the late David and Nancy (Clarey) O’Riley. Lila graduated as a RN from Orillia Soldiers Memorial, Orillia, Ontario in 1948 and moved to Halifax in 1949, married in 1951 and worked at the Victoria General Hospital. She enjoyed her profession as a nurse and also enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, sewing, getting out, visiting with others, and in later years valued the independence of still driving her own car. She was a volunteer with the Tearmann Society, was a long-time member of Trinity United Church, UCW, Trinity Book Club and was past superintendent of Trinity Sunday School. She was a member of the 55 Plus Club, a past member of the Bluenose Curling Club and in 1952 she became a member of a neighbourhood bridge club. Mom also tutored a number of students in her home over the years. She took a nursing refresher course after her children were grown and resumed her nursing career. She enjoyed many years as a special duty nurse at the Aberdeen Hospital and in clients’ homes. Family was very important to her; she enjoyed her grandchildren, having a special connection with each of them. Lila was predeceased by her husband Ernie; son-in-law, Allan Cameron; brother, Robert; sister, Millie (Jim) Ward; brothers and sister-in-law, Harold and Vera Sutherland and Bill Kingston. She is survived by her three daughters: Wendy (Brad) MacDonald, Jane Cameron (Kevin Campbell), Carolyn (Graham) MacNeil; grandchildren: Ryan (Lindsey) MacDonald, Ian and Evan Cameron, Nicole and Steven MacNeil; brother, George (Shelby) O’Riley, Woodstock, Ontario; sisters-in-law: Elsie (O’Riley) Wregitt and Shirley Kingston, Ottawa, Ontario; nieces and nephews; and special exchange student, Gabi Oliveira, New York City. The family would like to extend special thanks to the many people who assisted Mom in her desire to stay at home; Private Caregivers: June Tucker, Cheryl Didsbury and Linda Arsenault; Pictou County Home Health Care Cooperative staff: Gerry, Tanya, Sharon and Tasha; and VON Pictou County Home Support staff. Special thank you to the staff of the Aberdeen Palliative Care Unit and long-time physician, Dr. Gregor MacLean. The family will receive visitors Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral service Friday, 2 pm in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Family flowers only please. Donations in her memory may be made to Trinity United Church or Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.  One morning when Mom was 87, she said, “I hope I live to be a ripe old age”.
