William Joseph "Bill" English

Passed on: February 5th, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of William Joseph "Bill" English, of Halifax, formerly of St. John's/ Goulds, NL, on February 5, 2017 at the QE2 hospital, Halifax NS. Born in Branch, St. Mary's Bay, NL, he was the only son of the late Joseph and Mary (Campbell) English. Bill was a plumber and pipe fitter, but was always first to lend a hand to any project that needed his help. He travelled across Canada to provide for his family, finishing his working career at the Bay Bulls Water treatment plant in Newfoundland for 28 years prior to his retirement. He and Doreen left their beloved Newfoundland three years ago for Halifax to be closer to their three daughters, returning to Newfoundland often to visit their two sons. Bill will always be remembered for his ability to mesmerize a room with his stories, his infectious laugh, his indomitable spirit in any argument, an amazing knowledge of history, his love of a hot cup of tea, and his deep and abiding passion for Newfoundland. He was a ferocious card player, and loved playing with the men's group in his building. He enjoyed a lifetime of fishing and hunting, and relished spending time outdoors with friends and family. Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, Doreen (Sears); daughters Susan English-Thompson (Rodney), Charlotte English-Roberts (Doug), Karen (David) Roddis; sons Keith (Elaine), Derrick (Tracy); grandchildren Joey, Jessica, and Joshua English, Victoria, Miranda, and Gabriel Thompson, Taylor, and Brooklyn Roberts, Benjamin and Grace Roddis, Olivia and Matthew English. He is also survived by his sister Francina (Francis) McGrath, St. John's, NL, and many nieces and nephews and extended family in Branch, NL. Also leaving to mourn sisters-in-law Eleanor (Eddy), Shirley (Bill, deceased), and brothers-in-law Raymond (Hannah), Joe (Kack, deceased), Doug, Peter (Ruby, deceased) and Gerald (Donna, deceased). Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, February 8th, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. The funeral Mass will take place at 11 am on Thursday, February 9th in St. John Vianney Parish, 4 Beaver Bank Rd, Lower Sackville. Reception to follow. Cremation and interment in St. John's, NL to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Sincere thanks to the staff and medical professionals from EHS and QE2 who worked so tirelessly on his behalf.
