Ruby (Ward) Schurman

Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada

Passed in: Maryland, United States
Passed on: February 4th, 2017

Maryland – Ruby Schurman. On February 4, 2017, the spirit of Ruby Sarah Schurman (age 88) began its journey back to her beloved Nova Scotia.
Ruby Ward was born in Trenton, Nova Scotia on September 16, 1928, and grew up on a small farm in the area. In 1952 she married her airplane pilot boyfriend Walter Schurman and settled down to raise a family. In 1955, she and Walter emigrated, with their daughter Sheila, to Braintree, MA. They subsequently moved to Weymouth, MA where they lived for the next 40 years. In 1959, her second daughter, Elayne, was born. In 1997, Walter and Ruby moved to Sykesville, MD to live with their daughter Sheila. It was from this home that her spirit took off on its return flight.
She was a proud American but she never forgot her roots and often talked about her love for her birthplace. The times she enjoyed most were her trips back to visit her many friends and family. It was these trips that enabled her to stock up on Canadian dry goods that she swore were far superior to their American counterparts. That belief was humorously debated by the American born side of the family.
Ruby was her own woman and faced all adversity with strength, grace, and resolve. She will be missed.
Predeceased by her husband Walter, Ruby leaves behind her daughter Sheila and husband Joe Leone of Sykesville, MD, her daughter Elayne and husband John Watts of Machias, ME, her grandchildren Joseph and Kimberly Leone, and Scott Watts, and we can’t forget her beloved, black cat Simone. She also leaves behind many friends and relatives on both sides of the border.
No services will be held. At some point in the future her physical remains will be transported back to Nova Scotia to rest beside her dear husband.
For those inclined to donate in her memory the family requests you buy a small keepsake that will forever remind you of Ruby. She would probably suggest a small Canadian flag.
