Alice Beatrice Furness

Surrounded by her family, our mother, Alice Beatrice Furness, age 86 passed away on December 5, 2016 at Dr. John Gillis Memorial Lodge. Beloved wife of the late Frederick Furness, daughter of the late James and Minnie Wilson (nee McCully) (who had a family of 12 children), mother to Elwood (deceased) Shirley (Carl), Arthur (Shelia), Sharon (Benny), Milton, Margaret (David), Douglas (Darlene, wife Gail), Marlene (Jeff) and grandmother to 20 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Mom became an army wife when she met her soldier boy after the war, they were married October 1948. They lived with his parents in Vernon Bridge until they moved to Picton, Ontario, Army Base. There until dad retired and they moved back to PEI, Vernon Bridge until they bought their own home on the Vernon River Road. Mother was very busy taking care of eight children. Mom was a soft heart who had a teapot on and doors open to friends and neighbors. She had very creative hands that could knit, crocket and sew on the old foot peddle Singer sewing machine. Preserves were a must for her family from jam to pickles to her bread that lined the warmer on the stove. Mom loved to pick wild flowers that grew around her home, a vase was always on the table in the kitchen and living room with Queen's Ann Lace and Brown Eyed Susan. It was hard when her hands took arthritis and her hobbies she could do no more. So the puzzle Word Jumble in The Guardian became her joy. We, the family, express our appreciation to the staff of the Dr. John Gillis Memorial Lodge for the kindness and excellent care given to our mother, Alice Furness where she spent her last two years. Thank you to relatives, friends, neighbors and those who attended our Mother's Wake and Funeral. Those who sent online condolences, messages of sympathy, flowers and donations made to the cemetery fund and donations of food brought to our homes. We, also, thank the Orwell WI for attending the funeral as a group, Reverend Karen MacNeil, the United Church Women ladies that provided refreshments following the funeral. Thank you to the Reader, Niece Kim Wilson and a special thanks to Granddaughter Emily MacLeod for such a wonderful remembrance of what a Great Grandmother she had in our Mother and to the Organist and choir. Special thanks to the Grandsons who acted as Pall bearers and the Grandaughters who were flower bearers. We extend appreciation to the Hillsboro Funeral Home staff for their advice and professionalism. And to those that opened and closed the gravesite.
