Donald Joseph “Buck” Landry

Donald Joseph “Buck” Landry

1933-2017
Donald Joseph "Buck" Landry left the world on Thursday, February 16, 2017, the same way he came into the world...in the middle of a snow storm. Having just celebrated his 84th birthday, Donald passed away at Westford Nursing Home in Port Elgin, NB, where he had spent the last two years under the excellent and enthusiastic care of the entire staff.
Donald was born, January 2, 1933 to Fidele and Marie "Bella" Landry of Church Street in Port Elgin. Donald spent the entirety of his life living there and was an easily recognizable part of the community. "Buck", as he was known to almost everyone, spent his years sharing laughs and horse and hockey stories with everyone in the community.
Buck was a fixture in Port Elgin. As a member of St. Clements Catholic Church, which he happened to live next door to his entire life, Donald was always a presence at any church event, supper or in the parking lot shoveling snow. Buck was also a proud and lifelong member of the Port Elgin volunteer fire department. He managed and ran the outdoor rink for years. He attended harness racing as often as he could and had the special privilege of attending the Gold Cup & Saucer race in Charlottetown for 50 years in a row. An accomplishment he was quite proud of when he was featured in the Moncton Times newspaper.
Though not one to talk much about it, Buck was equally proud of his ability to overcome his substance abuse and spent the last 40 years of his life alcohol free.
A bachelor, Buck is survived by his sister Isabel Jackson of Amherst, niece Karen Jackson, Halifax; nephew Ron (Loriann) Jackson, Calgary; nephew Ken Jackson, Amherst. He also has two grand nieces of whom he was very proud of, Colleen and Christine both in Calgary. He also is survived by sister-in-law Gloria Jackson, Rexton and his good friends and neighbours, Terry and Ken Murphy of Port Elgin
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the St. Clements Cemetery Fund or the Port Elgin food bank.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Jones Funeral Home's Port Elgin location (506-364-1300). A celebration of Buck's life will be held at the St. Clements Catholic Church at a later date with internment in the spring.
Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting Buck's online memorial at www.jonesfuneralhome.ca or through the Jones Funeral Home Facebook Page.
