Charles "Breton" Murphy
Breton was born in Glace Bay, N.S., February 23, 1973 and passed on February 21, 2017. He grew up in Big Pond, NS. Throughout his life he spent as much time as he could in Glace Bay and Margaree with his family. It was at Cape Breton Bible Camp that Breton made his most important decision to follow Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He lived wholeheartedly for Him from that day forward. After high school, Breton went to Ontario Bible College (now Tyndale University) where he met the love of his life, Mary Jane. They were married two years later and lived in Dartmouth, NS. Breton was all about serving people, whether while driving a truck as his occupation was or in full time ministry. Early in their married life he and Mary Jane spent a year and a half living in New Hampshire at His Mansion Ministries, helping hurting young people dealing with various life challenges. After that season they returned to Dartmouth where Breton returned to driving truck as his occupation. After the birth of his two children, James and Katie, he joined the Village Missions – a church planting organization - and took the family to “the Wild Wild West” for an adventure in training for the ministry. Breton enjoyed his most encouraging year of ministry at the Garrington Community Church in Alberta. After that year, they moved to Middle Stewiacke, Nova Scotia and pastored Countryside Community Church for 8 years. Following their time of faithful service there the pull back to his precious Cape Breton could no longer be denied, and in 2013, he packed up his family and moved back to Glace Bay. Breton loved snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and driving trucks (which started at a young age with Tonkas). But most of all, he loved spending time with his family. His children, James and Katie, were his joy! Breton was a man who loved his Lord and Savior. He was passionate about the Word of God and was willing to present it whenever he could. He lived out what he believed and was an example of Christ to all he met. His heart’s cry until his last day was for each individual in his family to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. After a valiant battle for a year against a rare form of cancer, Breton went home to be with his Savior surrounded by his family. He is survived by wife, Mary Jane; son, his ”buddy” James; daughter, his “princess”, Katie, mother, Darlene (Shaw) Murphy; sisters, Bobbi Jean (David Fletcher) Murphy, Geralyn (Aaron Brown) Murphy, Sandra (Chris Kerr) MacLean, Amanda (Scotty) Campbell; father, Bob Murphy; grandfathers, Michael MacLean, and John Murphy; nephews, nieces, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins, including his Uncle Grant Shaw who was like a big brother to him. He is predeceased by father, Michael MacLean; maternal grandparents Gerald and Jean (MacKay) Shaw, who were like parents to him; paternal grandmothers, Frances (Keagan) MacLean and Bernadette (MacNeil) Murphy. While Breton loved Cape Breton, he is now in the real “Promise Land” with His Lord and Savior and is still asking as many that will hear to join him in Paradise! The family is so thankful for all the loving care Breton received over the past year, especially Dr. Daniel Rayson and his nurse Kim. You are the best! We would also like to send a special thanks to his Aunt Krista Gallant who was great support to Breton during his illness over the past year. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Breton’s life will take place at S.W. Chant Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra Street, Sydney on Saturday February 25, 2 p.m. Visitation and reception to follow at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Breton’s memory to Cape Breton Bible Camp or Munro Academy.
