John Sheldon Mercer

It is with deep sadness that we, the family of John Sheldon Mercer,
announce his sudden passing at home.
Born in Glace Bay in 1950 Johnny was the son of the late Bob and Frances (Rideout) Mercer. Johnny was a graduate of Morrison Glace Bay High School and University of New Brunswick’s Maritime Forest Ranger School in 1978. He was employed by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources retiring in 2015. A true outdoorsman he loved gardening, hiking and snowshoeing on his property. An avid sports fan many hours were spent cheering on his Green Bay Packers and Detroit Red Wings. Johnny is survived by his brother, Kenny Mercer; sisters, Roberta (Steve) Melnick and Gail (late Maurice) Gouthro. Also surviving are nieces Amy (Rob) Mahoney and their children, Fiona and Jack; Annette (Jody) DeCoste and their children, Maggie and Dustin; Adele Gouthro (Joel MacDonald) and their children Nathan and Brayden; nephews, Stephen and Ben Melnick and Chris Woodford; Aunt Mora Patterson, who he had a special bond with. We will miss his many stories at family gatherings, his compassion and thoughtfulness. As per Johnny’s wishes cremation will take place with no visitation or funeral. A family service will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Search and Rescue, Two Rivers Wildlife Park, Heart & Stroke Fund or charity of choice.
