Of Upper Island Cove passed peacefully away at the Carbonear General Hospital on Monday, February 27, 2017. Mr. Butler was 84 years old. He leaves to mourn his loving family: wife of 57 years, Margaret Butler; children Debbie (Stan Wilcox), Don (Kim) and Dawn (Scott Akerman); grandsons Adam and Benjamin Sturge, Todd and Nicholas Butler, Douglas, Riley and Matthew Akerman; sister Ruby (Stuart Murray); brothers: Alec (Vera) and Arch (Shirley) and a large and extended group of family and friends. He was predeceased by his son RCMP Constable Douglas Butler (December 13, 1960 - October 16, 1982); parents Mark & Alfreda Butler; sisters Alethia (Beaton Cuff) & Mary (Roy Cook) and brother Gordon (Nora). Harold had an extensive career on the rough, tumble and sometimes calm waters of our North Atlantic. He enjoyed fishing and looked forward to the recreational fishery each year with his brother Arch. Next to his family, his second love was the Loyal Orange Lodge of which he was a lifelong member. The funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m.. on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from St. Peter's Anglican Church & Cemetery, Upper Island Cove. The family received relatives and friends at Slade's Funeral Home, Cranes Road, Upper Island Cove on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 from 8-9 p.m.; Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, flowers are gratefully accepted or, donations may be made in his loving memory, to a charity of one's choice.
