Edith Alice (Robinson) MacAulay

Born: May 22nd, 1938

Passed on: March 11th, 2017

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful, cherished mother. Mom began the next step of her journey on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family in Halifax after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Born in North Sydney on May 22, 1938, Edith (78) was the daughter of the late Beatrice (Pyke) and Benjamin Robinson. Mom spent the majority of her life in North Sydney before her move to Halifax to be close to her children and grandchildren.
In her early years she enjoyed operating her hair dressing business while raising five children. Edith was active in her community. A past president of the Sprigs of Heather Pipe Band, a member of the UCW, Choir and Elder of St Matthew Wesley United Church and a proud supporter of the Dorados swim team. Mom had many passions in life, the first being her devoted love to her family. She was a role model of strength, love, kindness and made our lives richer with her presence. We will miss her beautiful voice. Mom never missed a chance to sing us a song and blessed us with her talent. Her wonderful sense of humor, generosity of soul and her ability to always hold a hand in need touched all who knew her. Mom was the centerpiece of our family. She took every opportunity to tell us how proud she was and how much she loved us. After moving to Halifax she remained active in curling at the Mayflower Club and an annual member of the International Tattoo Choir. Mom’s hands were never still. She loved to garden, sew and bake after her daily swim or walk. Edith is survived by her children, Wendy (Mike) Murphy, Patricia (Paul) Francis, Jennifer (Dave) Deveau and Ann (Jermaine) Mombourquette; daughter-in-law, Marie Beaupre; sisters, Patricia (Dave) Boutlier and Pauline Boyd and sisters-in-law, Bessie Rogers and Ann Robinson. Dearly loved and irreplaceable to her grandchildren, Erin, Sarah, Brian (Francis), Sean, Patrick, Michaela, Ryan (Murphy), Lauren, Ethan (Deveau), Zoe, Lucia, Benjamin (Mombourquette) and Marieve (Beaupre-MacAulay); many nieces and nephews and a special niece close to her heart, Paula (Robinson) Hartigan.
Edith was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harold MacAulay and son, Harold Jr.; brothers, Benjamin and Ernest Robinson in infancy and special brother-in-law, Allister Boyd. She will also hold a place in the hearts of her four-legged grandchildren. We would like to thank Paulette for her caregiving over the last few weeks. You made us feel as if we were leaving Mom in the hands of family. Mom believed that a person was not measured by the years that they lived but by the deeds that they did.
Visitation for Edith will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date. To honor her love of animals, memorial donations can be made to the SPCA, Hope for Wildlife, or St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
“I expect to pass through this world but once.
Any good, therefore, that I can do, or any
Kindness I can show to any fellow creature,
Let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it
For I shall not pass this way again.”
