Ottawa/New Glasgow - Laurence Raymond McChesney, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on March 5th, 2017. Laurence was diagnosed with ALS in November.
Born in New Glasgow, NS, December 11th, 1950, he was the youngest son of Laurence “Lolly” and Lydia (Dunbar) McChesney. Laurence grew up in the North End of New Glasgow, attended St. John’s Academy, New Glasgow Junior and Senior High Schools. Laurence was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University. He was employed for many years with Canada Post New Glasgow before moving to Ottawa. He was employed with Larga Baffin in Ottawa until his passing.
Laurence was a former member of the New Glasgow Kinsmen Club. His greatest pride and joy were his three grandchildren. Laurence never missed a chance to attend a swim, hockey, or curling event. Many will remember Laurence for his pizza making skills, working for the Wagonwheel in his earlier years and then continuing with his own pizza business.
Laurence is survived by his daughter, Karla (Doug) Clarke and son, Derick (Patty O’Brien) McChesney. He was loving grandfather of Liam, Taylor and Thomas; brother of Helen McChesney and Ann (Angus) MacDougall. He was predeceased by his brother, Francis McChesney (husband of Jeanette McChesney). He was dear uncle of Yvonne, Gregory (Terry), Mark (Denise) and the late Scott and great uncle of Rhys, Tori, Tegan and Graylyn.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, NS. Visitation will be Sunday, March 19th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held on Monday March 20th, at 11 am at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow, NS with reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
