Our beautiful, caring mother, Jean Caume of Reserve Mines, passed away in Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the age of 94 after a long illness with Alzheimer’s. Her loving family was by her side. Born in Minto, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Amelia (Vandemarin) Shibinette.
After her mother’s sudden death, Jean, at the age of four went to live with her grandmother, Emma Vandemarin. She lived with her until she got married in 1940 to Lawrence Caume.
Jean was a devout Roman Catholic and very much involved with the C.W.L. at St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines. For decades, along with other C.W.L. members, she volunteered many hours creating beautiful receptions for funerals and other events held at the church. Jean was a fifty year member of the C.W.L. and always looked forward to the many events that took place. For many years both she and her husband, Lawrence, operated the corner store (Caume’s Dairy) on the corner of Main Street and Official Row, Reserve Mines. Jean is survived by her son, Robert (Margie) Caume; daughters, Amelia (Wayne) Currie and Marie Dellavalle, with whom she resided until she went to Maple Hill Manor. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Robert Caume, Jennifer (Jamie) McBride, Meghan Dellavalle, Duane (Klara) Currie, Lauren (Joe) Shanahan, Liesl Currie and her six great-grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Caume and her son, Dennis. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines followed by a reception in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A special thank you to the staff of Maple Hill Manor for the kindness and care given to our mother over the years. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of one’s choice.
