NEW GLASGOW – Helen Marie English, 98, New Glasgow passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her family.
Born at Greens Brook, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Ephraim and Ella Mae (Pushie) MacLellan.
Helen was the matriarch of the English family. Living independently, she enjoyed playing cards with friends, walking among the yellow roses in her garden during the summer and reading a good book until the wee hours of the morning. Helen often sketched the birds amongst the flowers as she fed them, never acknowledging the accomplished artist she had become. She had a keen interest in politics, loved a good joke and was known for her quick wit. Above all, Helen will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend.
Surviving are daughters, Marie (Marshall) Doyle, Plymouth; Jeanne (Allan) Burke, Dartmouth; Judy (Wes) MacLennan, Willowdale; sons, David (Eileen) English and John (Debbie) English, Sutherland’s River; grandchildren, Donald (Susan) Doyle, Allan Doyle (Wanda Smith) and Jim (Alison) Doyle, Jennifer (Blaine) Burke-Kent, Janet (Craig) Hawkins, Ian (Jennifer) and Elizabeth MacLennan, Kate and Gillian English, Marcus English; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by husband, Harold English; infant son, Donald; grandson, Robbie Doyle; sisters, Evelyn MacLellan in infancy, Ann Ross and Wilda Sweet; brother, Elmer MacLellan.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Interment will be in Abercrombie Cemetery at a later date.
Donations may be made in Helen’s memory to Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
