Mary Frances MacNeil, 94, of St. Peters Road, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with her beloved family at her side. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Leo and Ann (Hines) Caufield. Frances was a veteran of WWII, serving in the women’s division of the RCAF in Lachine, Quebec. She was an active member of St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney, where she sang in the choir and was involved with the CWL. Frances was the director the Unison Society of Cape Breton, and on the national board of the Elizabeth Fry Society prior to her retirement. She was an avid golfer, well known around Cape Breton Island for winning many club championships. A member of Lingan Golf & Country Club, she served as past president. As well as golf, Frances had many other passions including, music, painting, poetry, adult education and travelling and skiing at Ski Ben Eion, and most of all her love of life in her beloved Cape Breton Island. She is survived by two daughters, Heather (Peter) Higgins, Malibu, CA and Linda (Stephen) Dempsey, Ketch Harbour, N.S.; four sons, Glen (Martha), Dartmouth, Erin (Carmel), Sydney, Gary (Teresa), Ottawa, Ont. and Kirk, Sydney; nine grandchildren, Laureen, Jonathan, Angela, Natalie, Jillian, Ian, Jason, Sarah and Cameron; six great-grandchildren, Thomas, Grayson, Easton, Damian, Emma and Olivia; sister, Rosaline, Windsor, Ont.
Frances was predeceased by her husband, Neil Vincent and her sister, Tessie. Sincere thanks to Dr. Estelle Cameron, Dr. Susan Rawal, Dr. Venkata Puppala, Dr. Bill Snow, Dr. Phillip Curry, Dr. Amin Buzaid, nursing staff and doctors in the renal clinic and palliative care, as well as Cape Care, the VON and all the wonderful caregivers who provided excellent care and compassion to our mother. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral mass will be held in St. Theresa’s Church on Saturday 11 a.m., with Fr. Dennis Lamey and Fr. Danny McLellan officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
