Evangeline ‘Eva’ Bessie Karrel

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother and the wife of Sam, Eva Karrel at the Victoria County hospital in Baddeck, NS on Tuesday April 11, 2017. Eva was born on March 13, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Miriam (Billard) Pyke and she is the last surviving member of her immediate family, predeceased by brothers, Arthur, Alvin, Eddy and Frank. She is survived by husband, Sam; sons, Bryan (Carol), Vancouver and Curtis (Wendy), Halifax; daughters, Miriam (late Jim Andrews), Halifax, Debi (Bob Delvallet), Bedford, Patsy (Stephen Simon), Hammonds Plains, Shelley, Vancouver and Pam (Alistair MacLeod), Inverness. Also survived by eight grandchildren, David and Vanessa Karrel, Natalie, Christopher and Allison Andrews, Jennifer and Ashley Simon, and Cassidy Karrel; also four great grandchildren, Garrick, Connor, Grace and Jackson. Eva was not only a wonderful mother she also had a successful business career, first as Manager of Glace Bay Travel and then as owner of The Hat Box in Glace Bay and Eva's Sportswear in Baddeck. For many years after she retired former customers would greet her and tell her how much they missed her and shopping at her stores. In her own way Eva was a philanthropist, she delighted in making donations to her favourite charities such as The Glace Bay Food Bank, St Mary's Church, Hadassah, and The Salvation Army and the IWK. She will be fondly remembered by special friends, Ethel Barrett, Jeanette Sterns, Carol Scott, Debbie Parsons, Barb and Al Pace, and Winnine Assaph, and many others whose lives Mom touched with her kindness. Mom and Dad lived in the MacLeod house in Baddeck for the past six months. Thanks to the staff, friends and guests of the home whom they met while there. Special thanks to Florence, Wilma, Kathleen and Gregor also thanks to the nursing staff at the Victoria County Hospital in Baddeck, in particular Dr. Chow whose compassion and thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.
Cremation will take place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 16, 6-8 p.m., Patten's Funeral Home, Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Monday, April 17, 2 p.m., Patten's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Internment at St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery.
