Mick Griffin

Passed in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Passed on: April 6th, 2017

Passed away on April 6, 2017 at the age of 59 years. Mick is survived by his loving wife Cathy Hunt; his children Merryn (James Kim) and Bryn; brother Sean; nephews Devin, Brennan and niece Shandis. Born and raised in Gander, Newfoundland, his parents Des and Joan Griffin were one of the founding families of the burgeoning airport town.

Mick was an avid hockey player, playing on the Gander Junior Flyers. He loved fly fishing and hiking in the woods with his buddies. He always maintained strong ties to his heritage and childhood friends. Not surprisingly, the friends he had at the age of six were with him at the end.

He moved to Toronto in 1975 to study film. Mick was a leading light for his classmates in the film department of Ryerson University, where he met the love of his life and made many lifelong friends. While there, Mick embraced experimental filmmaking, and developed editing skills that would lead him to a long and distinguished career.

He started his vocation in the studio at Ryerson, then moved to Best Labs and Rabko. Mick worked as a TV commercial editor at Schulz Productions and Partners Film, before becoming a senior editor/partner at Flashcut, then Rooster Post Production. Mick's Black Label ads were special to him because "they were like little experimental films that brought some cred from independent filmmaker friends."

Mick won many awards during his career, including Cannes Lions, the Bob Mann Post Production Award for excellence, and the Fritz Spiess Lifetime Achievement award, where it was noted:

"(Mr. Griffin) has done it all. A perfectionist like no one else, his youthful style, mixed with his years of experience, represents the ongoing renewed direction of this award."

Originally inspired to become involved in film by the rugged beauty of his Newfoundland home, Mick's career came full circle when he worked on a series of TV ads promoting tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador.

For all his achievements, Mick was most proud of his intelligent and creative daughters. He loved spending time with them at the cottage. He was a wicked, ever-winning Scrabble player, despite being terrible at spelling.

Mick's bravery and open-hearted generosity to all those around him when faced with his diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis will forever serve as an inspiration to all.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Cirone and the REACT team in ICU, and the staff of St Joseph's Hospital for the care and attention provided to Mick in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Toronto Rehab-Rumsey Centre would be appreciated. Celebration of Life and wake has taken place in Toronto, ON.
