It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Muriel Wilena Reid, age 96. Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow on Thursday, April 20, 2017.
Born in Thorburn, she was a daughter of the late James Arthur and Jessie (MacGuinnis) MacIntosh.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was predeceased by her husband John, daughter Janice, several brothers and sisters.
She will be sadly missed by her son Barrie (Carol), granddaughter Tara (Adam) Bates, grandson Michael (Amanda MacArthur) Reid, great-grandsons Jack and Logan Bates, sisters Mrs. Sadie Cameron, Miss June MacIntosh, and several nieces and nephews.
Mom was very proud of her home in Thorburn and she and dad took great pride in keeping the house and grounds looking beautiful.
She was very active in her community, serving in senior roles in several community organizations. Mom was always willing to help anyone in need, especially loved helping young children in the community and having fun with them.
She was a friend to all she met. Mom devoted her life to caring for my sister Janice and in the early 1960s was one of the founding executive members of the Pictou County Mentally Handicapped Association which has since grown to Summer Street Industries.
She was a lifelong member of Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn and was a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Mom was a published poet and a strong supporter of lifelong learning.
She was a long-time member of Dorcas Rebekah Lodge No. 42 Thorburn.
Mom prided herself in looking good, dressed in the latest fashions and she loved to shop.
My mother was blessed with great friends and neighbours and their support and kindness was comforting to her throughout her life, especially during the past year.
Mom took great pride in her grandchildren Tara and Michael. They were special to her until the end.
We also want to thank the staff at Glen Haven Manor for the excellent care and the kindness they gave mom during her stay there.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service held in early May in the Union Presbyterian Church Thorburn under the direction of the H.W. Angus Funeral Home. Donations in her memory may be made to the Thorburn Cemetery Association, Summer Street Industries or a charity of your choice.
