We regret to announce the passing of Phyllis Alberta, beloved wife of Roy Rideout. Phyllis went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 24, 2017. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Henry Commins and Alberta (Fletcher).
Phyllis was employed as a teacher. She graduated from Normal College in Truro in 1940 and on July 18, 1953 at First United Church, Truro Phyllis and Roy, the love of her life, were married by the Reverend C. Earle Gordon. During her teaching career she also took courses at Dalhousie summer schools and the late Xavier College. She taught in Tenecape, Lower Debert, Bible Hill, Wakefield, Que., Truro, RCAF Station in Parant, Que., Donkin, Big Glace Bay, Glace Bay Central and also did supply teaching in the industrial area.
Phyllis was a devoted member of Newsom United Church, Past President of the UCW, a former superintendent of the Sunday school, former member of the Newson Choir and director of the Jr. Choir and a member of the Retired Teacher Organization of the NSTU.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Roy; sister, Rhoda Commins of Norridge, Illinois, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
As well as her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Joseph in infancy.
Thanks to Dr. David Ley and nursing staff at 3rd South of Glace Bay Hospital for their care and compassion and to the ladies of New Waterford Home Care Service Society for looking after Phyllis.
Thanks to Fely McNeil and Alice Ross, to Sonny and Mary Blackmore, Lynn Rosta, Enid Warner and Evelyn Smith for their loving care and assistance, and to all the people of Newsom United Church for their care and support.
Visitation will take place at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 27. Funeral service will be held at Newsom United Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2017.
Donations may be made to Newsom United Church.
