It is with heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of a wonderful, sincere and genuine man; a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Walter passed away suddenly at his home on Monday, April 24, 2017 at the age of 65.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Thomas Edward and Dolores May (Dunlop) Porter.
Walter was a long time employee with Canada Post, he was a letter carrier for 35 years; retiring in 2008. He was an avid hunter and angler. He also enjoyed playing cards and billiards with his friends, collecting old comic books and listening to music; especially the oldies. He truly enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends; he loved when people visited him and spending time around the pool. Walter also had a great sense of humor and he got great enjoyment from playing jokes on his family and friends. He will also be remembered by many as a great proof reader; he excelled in spelling and punctuation. He will mainly be remembered for his times spent with his loving family and friends, he was a true family man who would grasp every opportunity life offered him to have fun and enjoyment.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Brenda (nee Martin); his ‘Golden Girl’ daughter, Tara (Joel); sons, Ryan (Cynthia) and Clint (Tania); cherished grandson, Brandon; sister, Barbara (Gerald) MacDonald; brothers, Robert (Annette), Darrel (Sandra), Leslie and Donald. He will also be sadly missed by a special niece, Terri-Lynn, who he thought of as a daughter; special sister-in-law, Lynda Martin; good friend, Reggie MacNeil; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and his other family of kids, who were the friends of his children, he was very close to all of them. Walter will also be dearly missed by his grand fur babies, Kobi and Diesel.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased his son, Brent and cherished mother-in-law, Joyce Martin.
Visitation for Walter will be held Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Myrna MacMullin will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2017 in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations in Walter’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
