It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Robert Glen Kettlewell, age 85, on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the QEII Health Science Centre, Halifax Infirmary Site.
Glen is survived by is his wife of 57 years, Mildred (Cartwright) Kettlewell; his son, Glen Robert (Kimberley), Quispamsis, NB; his daughters, Nancy (Tim) O’Brien, Waverley, NS, Audra (Chris) Gallant, Beechville, NS; his two grandchildren, Liam and Brenna Kettlewell, and many nieces and nephews.
Glen was born in Walkerville, Essex County, Ontario on February 23, 1932. He was the son of the late Lorne and Erma Kettlewell and step-son of Marjorie Kettlewell. He was employed with the Chrysler Canada as a Quality Control Inspector in Ontario and later as a stevedore with CN Marine, North Sydney. Glen was an avid gardener, he and Mildred took great pride in maintaining their flower and vegetable gardens as well as their property in Georges River. He was an active volunteer in his community for many years. He was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines and participated on several committees including the Board. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir. Glen was a member of the Kiwanis Golden K Club in Sydney Mines and was an active participate in club events including chairperson of the Meals on Wheels program for 15 years. He enjoyed bowling from an early age. He bowled in the CN Marine Bowling League, and enjoyed travelling with his teammates to bowling tournaments. In his younger years Glen was involved in Scouts Canada and was recognized as a ‘King Scout’ and went on to become a Scout Leader.
Glen was a humble man, always putting others ahead of himself. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially vacation trips and family gatherings. He and Mildred loved the spirit of the holidays and especially enjoyed dressing in Halloween costumes every year to entertain the local trick or treaters.
He was predeceased by his father and mother; his stepmother, and one sister, Gloria Kettlewell.
Visitation for Glen will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Carman United Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. A private family burial will be held at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Carman United Church or Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
